There are many voices in this world, some may seem louder than others. But increasing the volume of each doesn’t help any of them become clearer, it only adds to the madness. In a world where everyone is talking, how can you be heard? I don’t completely know but I do think there are some choices that send us in the right direction.
Be a decent human being. Just think, would I want this said about me, in this way? Check this out, there is a way to communicate your thoughts, feelings, and opinions without tearing someone else down. I was looking for this in our last election, couldn’t find it.
Be a listener. Don’t presume to think you know what it is like to be everyone or to understand everything. There are just some things you will never experience and therefore couldn’t possibly begin to understand. Practice being a listener. Grit your teeth through the points you don’t agree with, bite your tongue when it offends your view, and become a listener. Learning to be a listener will inevitably increase your chances of being heard.
Be a relationship builder. Our kids are watching and learning. They are watching what it looks like to be human, adults, Americans. The current model is to make camp with who agrees with you and mud-sling on everyone else. I dare you to sit face to face with someone who doesn’t see things like you, wasn’t raised like you, and believe in different things than you. If you’re able you may just learn something, and gain a friend. Build relationships, don’t tear them a part. Our kids are watching, the future is watching.
