In a world of ruin
Broken brick and shattered stone
His eyes are looking through me
From a future far unknown
Cutting through fog and gleaming with light
His gaze goes undeterred
I know not where I am or where he might be
Yet all seems familiar
a lost and forgotten word
To my surprise he begins to speak
Through time and space I hear it
Like rushing waters
Like birds taking flight
Three words of perseverance
In a tone that cuts through to matter itself
“Build To Last” the voice cried
Through a smile again, but with voraciousness
“build To Last!” a second time
My eyes of youth have seen his life
Though I know not how or when
Like moons in orbit around a burning sun
In time we will meet again
As doors of time begin to close
I turn to go my way
There in the distance, staring in wonderment
My world from a younger day
I know his face, he studies mine
Such youth, such promise, fresh clay
Unable to speak, he waits for direction
My voice inside knows what to say
“Build To Last.”
